Circle Crop — Make a Round Profile Picture | KhanTools
Circle Image Crop turns any photo into a round picture with a see-through background. Use it when you need a neat circular avatar, a headshot for a website team page, or a round image to drop into slides and documents.
What you get
The download is a square PNG. Inside the circle is your photo. The four corners outside the circle are fully transparent, so the image sits cleanly on any background color, light or dark.
There are no settings to fiddle with. The shape is always a perfect circle and the format is always PNG, because PNG is the common format that keeps transparency. The file is named after your original with -circle added, so me.jpg becomes me-circle.png.
Making a round profile picture, step by step
- Click Click to upload an image and choose a photo. JPG, PNG and WebP files work well.
- A circle appears over the photo. Drag it to center it on the face or object you want.
- Drag the handles around the circle to make it larger or smaller. It always stays round.
- Scroll your mouse wheel over the photo, or pinch on a phone, to zoom in. Drag the photo to shift it under the circle.
- Click Download Circle PNG to save the result.
- Click Reset if you want to try another photo.
Where a round image is useful
- Chat and community avatars on Discord, Slack or Teams. These apps already show avatars as circles, so cropping it yourself lets you choose exactly what stays in frame.
- A headshot for a CV, portfolio site or email signature, where a round photo looks tidy next to text.
- Team or speaker pages on a website, where every person should be shown in the same round shape.
- Presentation slides and documents. Because the corners are transparent, the circle won’t show a white box when you place it on a colored slide.
- Logos or product shots that you want to show as round badges or icons.
Getting a good-looking circle
Leave a little space above the head. Faces that touch the top of the circle look cramped, especially at small sizes like chat avatars.
Center the eyes slightly above the middle of the circle. That’s how most professional headshots are framed.
Start with a sharp, reasonably large photo. The output size is the size of the circle on your original image, measured in real pixels. A tiny circle drawn on a small photo gives a tiny file that can look blurry once a site enlarges it.
Remember that the corners get cut away. Anything important near the edges of a square photo, such as text or a hand, may disappear.
Private by design
Your photo never leaves your computer or phone. The browser loads it, draws the circle and creates the PNG locally. Nothing is uploaded to our server and nothing is kept once you close the tab. For personal photos of you, your family or your colleagues, that’s one less copy floating around online.
What this tool doesn’t do
- No other shapes and no ovals. For squares and rectangles, use Image Crop.
- No border, outline or background color is added. The outside is simply transparent.
- No JPEG output, since JPEG can’t store transparency.
- It doesn’t remove the background behind a person, it only cuts the photo into a circle. To get rid of the background first, use Background Remover, then bring the result here.
- PNG files can be larger than you expect. If a site rejects your avatar for size, try Image Compress.
Frequently asked questions
Why are the corners white or black in some apps?
The corners are transparent. A few image viewers show transparency as white, black or a checkerboard. When you upload the PNG to a site or put it on a slide, the background behind it shows through.
Can I choose the output size in pixels?
Not directly. The file is as wide as the circle you draw on the original photo. Draw a larger circle on a larger photo to get a bigger result.
Do I need this if Discord or Slack already shows my avatar as a circle?
Not strictly, but those apps crop for you and you may not like where they cut. Cropping here first means the circle you see is the circle everyone else sees.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Everything happens inside your browser, and the PNG is saved straight to your device.
Can I get a JPG instead?
This tool only saves PNG, because a JPG would fill the transparent corners with a solid color. If you really need a JPG, use Image Crop with the 1:1 ratio for a square version.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Pick a photo from your gallery, drag the circle with a finger and pinch to zoom.
