Online Text Editor with HTML Export | KhanTools
Write and format text in a familiar word-processor layout, then take it with you as clean HTML or plain text. It’s handy when a website, CMS or newsletter tool wants HTML and you would rather not write the tags by hand.
What the editor can do
The toolbar above the writing area covers most everyday formatting. Hover over a button to see its name.
- Text styles: bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, superscript and subscript.
- Structure: bulleted and numbered lists, indent and outdent, and paragraph formats such as headings and quotes.
- Look: font family, font size, text and background colour (the brush button), and left, centre, right or justified alignment.
- Inserts: links, images, video embeds, tables and horizontal lines.
- Clean-up: the eraser clears formatting from a selection, and the copy-format button copies the style of one piece of text so you can apply it to another.
- Source view: the first button switches to the raw HTML so you can check or tweak the tags directly.
- Undo and redo, a full-screen mode for distraction-free writing, and a live word count at the bottom.
From blank page to finished HTML
- Click into the editor and replace the sample line with your own text, or paste text from another document. Formatting such as bold and lists is kept when you paste.
- Use the paragraph menu to turn titles into headings. This gives your HTML a proper structure instead of just big text.
- Add links, a table or an image where you need them.
- Open source view if you want to look over the HTML before you export.
- Pick an export: Copy HTML puts the HTML code on your clipboard, Export HTML saves it as
document.html, and Export TXT saves the words only as document.txt.
Where the output is useful
Copy HTML is the one most people want. Paste it into the HTML or code view of a blog editor, a product description field in an online shop, a forum that accepts HTML, or an email template. You get headings, lists and links without typing a single tag.
Export TXT strips everything back to plain words. Use it when a form or app only accepts plain text, or when you want to remove odd formatting picked up from a web page or a Word file.
Export HTML gives you a file you can keep, send, or open in a browser to check how it looks.
Tips before you start
- Your work isn’t saved. Nothing is stored if you close the tab, refresh or leave the page, so export or copy your text before you go.
- Copy HTML copies the code itself. If you paste it into Word or a normal email body you’ll see the tags. Paste it into a field that expects HTML.
- Images you insert are embedded directly in the HTML as data, not as links. That makes the HTML much longer, and some email clients and websites won’t show images stored this way. For the web, it’s often better to upload the image to your site and link to it.
- The exported HTML file contains just your content, with no page styling around it.
Private by design
The editor runs in your browser. What you type isn’t sent to our server, and the exported files are created on your own device.

Frequently asked questions
Does the editor save my work?
No. There’s no autosave. Copy or export your text before you leave the page.
Can I export to Word or PDF?
No. The exports are HTML, plain text, and copying the HTML to your clipboard.
What is the difference between Copy HTML and Export HTML?
They contain the same HTML. Copy HTML puts it on your clipboard for pasting. Export HTML saves it as a file called document.html.
Why do I see tags like <p> when I paste?
Copy HTML copies the source code. Paste it into the HTML or source view of the place you’re writing, not into a normal text box.
Can I edit the HTML directly?
Yes. Click the source button at the left of the toolbar to switch between the visual editor and the raw HTML.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Everything stays in your browser.
Can I open an existing HTML file?
There’s no file open button. You can paste HTML into source view, or paste formatted text into the editor.
